How far is the hostel from the airport?

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is approximately 20 kilometers from Chillout Hostel, which translates to about 30–40 minutes by car depending on traffic. We offer an airport pickup and drop-off service — contact us at chilloutescalante@gmail.com to arrange this in advance.

What types of rooms does Chillout Hostel offer?

We offer two types of accommodation: shared dormitory beds and a private room. Dormitory beds start from [$13] per person per night. The private room starts from $35 per room per night and is ideal for couples or solo travelers who prefer more privacy.

What amenities are included?

All guests have access to free high-speed WiFi, a fully equipped shared kitchen, a common lounge area, secure lockers for valuables, clean bed linens, and free luggage storage on arrival and departure day (until 5 pm free on departure).

Does Chillout Hostel have lockers?

Yes. We have secure lockers available for all guests to store their valuables. Bring your own padlock or rent one from us for $5. We recommend using the lockers for passports, electronics, and cash.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is from 14:00. Check-out is by 11:00. Free luggage storage is available before check-in and after check-out (until 5 pm free on departure).

Is Chillout Hostel good for solo travelers?

Yes — Chillout Hostel is very popular with solo travelers. The shared dormitory is a great way to meet fellow backpackers, and our common area is a social space where guests naturally connect. We're not a party hostel, so you can expect a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere.

Is breakfast included?

Breakfast is not included, but we have a fully equipped shared kitchen where you can prepare your own meals, and there are many excellent cafés and restaurants within a 5-minute walk of the hostel.

Do you have parking?

We do not have a dedicated parking lot, but street parking is generally available nearby. Please note that driving in San José city center can be challenging — we recommend using Uber or public transport.

Is Barrio Escalante safe for tourists?

Barrio Escalante is considered one of the safest and most tourist-friendly neighborhoods in San José. It is a popular area for both locals and travelers, with a strong community presence and plenty of foot traffic in the evenings. As with any city, we recommend standard precautions: don't flash expensive items, use Uber at night, and keep your belongings secure. Our staff are always happy to give you local safety tips.

Do you organize tours from the hostel?

How do I get from the airport to Chillout Hostel?

(2) Take the public bus from Alajuela Tuasa (near the airport) to San José and then a local bus to Barrio Escalante. We're happy to provide detailed public transit instructions — just email us before you arrive.

What is your cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 48 hours before check-in. Cancellations within 48 hours are charged one night's stay.

Do you have a curfew?

No, there is no curfew at Chillout Hostel. Guests have 24-hour access to the property. We do ask guests to be respectful of others and keep noise to a reasonable level after 22:00 in sleeping areas.

Is the hostel suitable for digital nomads?

Yes! Chillout Hostel is popular with digital nomads. We have reliable high-speed WiFi throughout the property. Barrio Escalante also has several excellent coworking spaces and cafés with strong internet connections within walking distance. The private room is especially popular with remote workers.
